Master Sgt. John McGee Sr.

ERWIN – Master Sergeant John W. McGee Sr., age 74, Erwin, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

MSG. McGee was a native of Washington County and son of the late Bernie & Mamie Misamore McGee. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a step-son, Ronald Arrowood; brothers, Clarence McGee; Emory McGee and Jimmy McGee; and a sister, Kathleen Cox.

He was of the Baptist faith.

MSG. McGee served in the US Army for 22½ years, from 1959-1982, and retired out of Ft. Campbell, KY, from HHC 20th Engineering Brigade. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving from 1968-1969 and was assigned to the 554 Construction Engineers in Cu Chi and the 79th group out of Long Binh as a Maintenance Supervisor, building roads and bridges. During his service in Vietnam, MSG. John McGee received the Bronze Star Medal.

After retirement, he worked as a carpenter and loved to travel.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline McInturff Arrowood McGee, Erwin; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda & Billy Watts; sons and daughters-in-law, John Wayne Jr. & Donna McGee and Jerry Lynn & Rita McGee; step children, Randal Arrowood, Ricky Arrowood and wife, Sherry, and Tammy Hensley and husband, Mike; sisters, Pauline Wycoff, Shelby Watson and husband, Jimmy, and Blanche Payne and husband, Gay; grandchildren, Heather Thomas, Jodi Douglas, Lindsay McGee, Brandy Willis and Jeremy McGee; step grandchildren, Matthew Arrowood, Megan Arrowood, April Hensley, Adam Hensley, Mindy Sparks and Christopher Arrowood; six great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all the doctors and nurses involved in his care, including his stay at Franklin Woods and Johnson City Medical Center. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Phillip Jones for all the care, support and dedication shown throughout the years – a true champion for the patient.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2011, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Lester Morelock and Rev. Raymond Conkin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service and other times at the home, 1016 Dry Creek Rd., Erwin, TN.

Interment services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011, at Jones Cemetery in Unicoi County with Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Military Honor Guard.
